Antioxidants are the key to keeping us looking and feeling young. And though you’ve probably heard about Vitamins C and E in the news and in beauty magazines, recent studies show beta-carotene may prevent age-related changes to the brain.
What does keeping your brain young have to do with skin care? Well, what you do to keep your brain healthy is often good for your skin (bonus!). Antioxidants work by repairing oxidation. Wrinkles, gray hair, glasses, and forgetfulness are all caused in some part by oxidation. But antioxidants can prevent and repair these undesirable effects of aging. Beta-carotene is one of the strongest fighting antioxidants discovered.
Beta-carotene is comprised of vitamins A, C, and E, zinc and selenium, and some plant chemicals known as bioflavonoids.
Studies show that, over time, those people who take beta-carotene supplements have better cognitive function in old age, over those who take no supplement. And that’s the key: over time. You need to help these antioxidants build up in your body over years, not weeks. This may sound disappointing, but holds an added benefit for you in the mean time: a trimmer waistline.
One of the best ways do get beta-carotene is through the foods you eat, which are healthy and low-fat.
- Orange, red, and yellow-colored produce
- Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, tomatoes, and apricots.
- Vibrant leafy greens
- Spinach, broccoli, and kale
